What is a Physiological Sigh?
First identified by physiologists in the 1930s, the physiological sigh is a pattern of breathing characterized by two inhales followed by a single extended exhale. Under normal conditions, humans perform this sigh spontaneously every 5 minutes to prevent lung collapse (atelectasis).
However, deliberately executing this breathing pattern triggers immediate physiological down-regulation. Research led by the Huberman Lab at Stanford University has shown that repeating this cycle just 1 to 3 times is the fastest way to reduce systemic anxiety in real-time.
The Mechanics: Why It Works
The physiological sigh operates through two primary mechanical pathways:
- Alveolar Re-inflation: The second, shorter inhale forces open the collapsed air sacs (alveoli) in your lungs. This doubling of lung volume allows for a massive accumulation of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) to pass from your bloodstream into your lungs.
- Vagal Activation: The long, slow exhale through your mouth causes your diaphragm to move upward. This compresses the chambers of your heart, signaling to the brain's sinoatrial node that blood flow is accelerating. The brain responds by sending an immediate signal via the vagus nerve to slow down your heart rate.
How to Perform It
Whenever you feel cognitive fatigue, workspace anxiety, or a sudden spike in stress during your workday:
- Take a deep inhale through your nose.
- At the very top of that inhale, take a second, sharp sniff to fully inflate your lungs.
- Exhale slowly and completely through your mouth with your lips relaxed.
